The Herbaliser – Take London
Ninja Tune’s most prominent hip hop collective with their seventh release. And it’s by far their best album yet. Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba’s innovative mixture of soul, jazz, funk and hip hop influences creates a sound that is a class of it’s own. Over the last decade, the duo has established themselves as a reliable constant in the UKs electronic and hip hop scene.
This claim is confirmed by the wide variety of styles, beats and bass on the tracklist. You can find the instrumental and angry sounding “Song for Mary” and the groovy funk piece “Gadget Funk” followed by “Kittynapper”, a kind of space funk with wah-guitars, and the Herbaliser typical orchestral and epic sounding arrangments of “Sonofanothamutha”.
As always, vocal tracks presented by a few of the most admiring MCs contribute to the album. The series of inspired raps from the likes of Jean Grae and Roots Manuva in songs like “Generals” or “If You Close Your Eyes” remind the people of how broad the duo’s taste is.
Attention to detail, slick ’60′s London gangsta movie soundtracks and individual samples mixed with impressive rhymes create a long term experince of the album. The Herbaliser understands to unveil new places your ears haven’t been yet.
